Cameroon's Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Sebastian Bassong Sunday scored the two goals that helped Tottenham Hotspur beat Liverpool FC 2-1 in the last game of the opening day of play in the English premier league.
Assou-Ekotto shot spurs into the lead with a devastating left foot strike at the 43rd minute of the game. It was his first goal for his club since he moved from France.
Bassong who played for the Lions for the first time in the friendly against Austria on 12 August, scored in his debut game for spurs. It was a corner kick and the former Newcastle man rose high and headed the ball into the net.
Both players, were born in France and have only recently been cleared (Bassong) or opted (Assou-Ekotto) to play for Cameroon.
Assou-Ekotto played his first game for Cameroon as left back in a friendly against Guinea and played his first competitive game against Togo in March 2009. He was sidelined by the interim coaching staff of the Lions that preferred to use Wome in the game against Morrocco and the friendly against the Ivory Coast.
This seems to have angered the man who could chosen to play for France to the point that he failed to turn up for the recent friendly.
The new Indomitable Lions coach, Paul Le Guen, has however promised to convince the young man. Le Guen decided to keep his discussion with the player to himself when pressed by the football site, Camfoot.com.
In Assou-Ekotto's absence... Sebastian Bassong, who is naturally a central defender, was called up to play at left-back against Austria. He did his best, but having Assou at the position is surely what Le Guen prefers.
Both men's performance would surely enhance their prospects for keeping a first choice berth in the Lions.
Alexandre Song Billong, another Cameroonian Lion who had once spotted a French national team shirt, also impressed on the opening day of the English premier league. He hardly made a wrong pass and kept guard in-front of the back four as Arsenal trounced Everton 6-1.
With Paul Le Guen having opted for 4-3-3 with just one defensive midfielder sitting deep - the fight for that spot between Stephane Mbia and Song when the latter comes back from his four game ban.
